Oral Health Tips for Summer

Summer brings lots of good things—warm weather, vacations, and a break from school. However, there are also a few not-so-fun things that come along with summer, including an increase in sunburns and dehydration. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you should be especially aware of the sun's effects on your body and mouth. 

In order to keep your teeth safe and bright all summer long, follow these tips.

Drink More Water

To stay healthy and hydrated, you should drink a glass of water every half hour during outdoor activities. Water helps your body flush out toxins and replenishes your supply of saliva, which can help prevent dry mouth.

There might be an urge to drink cold beverages, but limit their consumption and choose the healthy option, i.e., 'water.'

Wear a Mouthguard

Spending time in the sun can be great for your mood, but too much sun can damage your teeth. Wear a mouthguard when participating in sports or outdoor activities.

Quit Smoking

Tobacco cigarettes contain thousands of chemicals, many of which can be detrimental to your oral health. The sugars in tobacco can increase your risk for tooth decay, and the nicotine and tar can stain your teeth. In addition, the chemicals in the smoke can irritate your gums, causing gum disease.

Use Mouthwash

Summer is a time for spending time outdoors and enjoying the warm weather. Unfortunately, the heat and sun can take a toll on your oral health. The dry air will dehydrate your mouth, which can increase the risk of tooth decay. Also, the acid in food can attack your enamel, causing discoloration and cavities.

Use mouthwash to help combat these risks. Mouthwash will wash away food particles and help prevent bacteria from forming in your mouth.

See Your Dentist For a Checkup

Summer is a great time to visit your dentist for a checkup. In addition to regular checkups, your dentist may recommend that you get a dental cleaning. Between all the barbecues and ice cream, summer can be rough on your teeth. Plaque builds up on teeth quickly after meals and between brushings, so it's important to see your dentist regularly.

After your dental cleaning, your dentist may recommend additional treatments, like fluoride treatment, to help strengthen your teeth. In addition to keeping your smile healthy, seeing your dentist for cleanings and checkups will give you a chance to ask any questions you may have about your oral health.

Eat Healthy Foods

Summer is the season for picnics, barbeques, and cookouts. Unfortunately, some of these summer treats can put your oral health at risk. Sugary foods and drinks, including sodas and fruit drinks, can cause cavities. Starchy foods, including potato chips and bread, can lead to plaque buildup. 

Make sure to consume healthy veggies and fruits more often. 

Brush & Floss Regularly

Brush and floss your teeth regularly. This can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease, both of which can be triggered by sugary foods and drinks.
